Spleen Flashcards
Spleen is _____ organ
Largest Lymphoid
Functions of Spleen
- Remove worn out RBCs and Microbial Agents
- Manufacture RBCs in fetal life and Lymphocyes after birth
- Produces IgM by Plasma Cells
- Stores RBCs and releases when required
Where is spleen located
It is located in the left Hypochondrium between fundus of stomach and diaphragm, behind the 9th 10th and 11th Ribs
Shape and Color of Spleen
Wedge Shaped and Purple In Color
The long axis of spleen corresponds to the long axis of
10th Rib
The medial end lies ____-
5cms away from the midline of back at the level of T10
The external features of Spleen are
- 2 Ends ( Anterior and Posterior )
- 3 Borders ( Superior, Inferior and Intermediate )
- 2 Surfaces ( Diaphragmatic and Visceral )
The Anterior End is
Lower pole/Lateral End is broad and is more like a border. It is directed downwards forwards and in the left. It is related to left colic flexure
The posterior End is
Medial/Upper Pole which is blunt and rounded, projected upwards and backwards and medially towards vertebral column. Related to upper pole of kidney
The Superior Border
It is thin and convex. It separates the visceral ( gastric impression ) surface from diaphragmatic surface. It has characteristic notches present near its anterior end
The Inferior Border
It separates the visceral ( Renal Impression ) surface from diaphragmatic surface. It is rounded and corresponds to the lower border of 11th rib
Intermediate Border
It is rounded and separates the gastric impression from renal impression on the visceral surface.
Diaphragmatic Surface
It is smooth convex and is directed upwards and backwards and to the left.
Visceral Surface and its impressions
It is concave and irregular. It has 4 impressions
- Gastric Impression
- Renal Impression
- Colic Impression
- Pancreatic Impression
Arterial Supply of Spleen
Splenic Artery, the largest branch of colic artery which transverses thru the lienorenal ligament to reach near hilum and divides into 5 or more branches which enter the spleen
