Spirometry Flashcards
What does a spirometer measure?
The volume of air breathed in and out
Why is a lung function test used?
response to therapy, pre-surgical assessment, study of growth and development
What kind of deflection is inspiration?
Upwards
What kind of deflection is expiration?
Downwards
How can inspiratory volume be calculates?
Tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume
What does forced flow-volume show?
How much air the subject can blow out and how fast. Response to treatment and progression of disease.
Define the Peak expiratory flow
Maximum speed of airflow as the patient exhales
What does an obstructive disease affect?
Reduces the speed that air can be breathed out (ratio less than 70%)
What does a restrictive disease affect?
Forced Vital capacity is significantly reduced (ratio greater than 70%)
What does a scalloping in expiration suggest?
Obstructive disease, as it takes longer to expel air from smaller airways. (COPD/Asthma)
How would a flow-volume loop change in a restrictive disease?
Volume would be less (Thinner loop)
