Functional histology Flashcards
What is the conducting portion of the respiratory tract?
Nasal cavity to bronchioles
What is the respiratory portion of the respiratory tract?
respiratory bronchioles to alevoli
At what structure does the extrapulmonary section end?
Primary bronchi
What types of epithelium are in the conducting portion of the respiratory tract?
Pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, except terminal bronchioles which is simple columnar with cilia
What types of epithelium are in the respiratory portion of the respiratory tract?
simple cuboidal with sparse cilia, except alveoli which is simple squamous
What is the term for mucous being moved by cilia into the pharynx to be swallowed?
Mucociliary escalator
Name 3 secretions from the epithelium and submucosal glands of the trachea and bronchi
Serum proteins, lysozyme, antiproteases
What is the purpose of clara cells?
They secrete a lipoprotein which prevents the walls sticking together during expiration
Briefly describe emphysema
destruction of alveolar walls and permanent enlargement of air spaced, air becomes trapped in the alveoli
Briefly describe pneumonia
Inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria, causes consolidation as the alveoli fill with inflammatory cells
Name 2 organisms that can cause pneumonia
Strep.pneumoniae, Staph.aureus
