Consciously competent
Addressing differences in culture and intentionally learning more and applying culturally appropriate care
Unconsciously competent
Automatically applying culturally appropriate care to individuals of diverse cultures
Example from SCY of consciously incompetent work of healthcare
Jeanine Hilt- asking Lee family what they believed was the cause of Lia’s illness because she knew that she was not educated on their culture
Example in SCY of lacking cultural competence according to cross model (unconscious incompetency)
Hospital system lacking interpreter services (not adopting beliefs or practices that include different cultures); stating care for the Hmong is practically “veterinary medicine”
Example of conscious competency in SCY
Sukey (psychologist) claiming to be the fixer of hearts in order to describe that she provided holistic care that built rapport with Lee family; later on Sukey asking “is this okay” and treading lightly with permission before performing procedures that may be foreign or unknown to people of diverse cultures
