Spinal Tract Flashcards
Medial lemniscal pathway
Dorsal column
Ascending pressure, vibration, fine touch and proprioception
Dorsal column
Synapse 1 of Dorsal Column
Ipsilateral nucleus cuneatus or gracilis (medulla)
Decussation of Dorsal Column
medulla - ascends c/l in medial lemniscus
Synapse 2 of Dorsal Column
VPL of thalamus
Ascending Pain and temperature
Lateral Spinothalamic tract
Ascending Crude touch and pressure
Anterior Spinothalamic tract
Synapse 1 of Spinothalamic tract
I/L gray matter of spinal cord
Decussation of spinothalamic tract
Anterior White Commisure –> ascends C/L
Synapse 2 of Spinothalamic Tract
VPL (thalamus)
Descending Volunary movement of C/L limbs
Ventral and Lateral corticospinal tract
Path of ventral and lateral corticospinal tract
(UMN) motor cortex –> through internal capsule –> DECUSSATION AT CAUDAL MEDULLA –> descends C/L –> synapse at ANTERIOR HORN –> LMN –> NMJ
Decussation of ventral and lateral corticospinal tract
caudal medulla (pyramidal decussation)
Voluntary command from motor cortex –> head and neck
Corticobulbar tract
weakness, atrophy fasciculations, hyporeflexia, decreased tone, flaccid paralysis
LMN injury
weakness, hyperreflexia, increased tone, babinski, spastic paralysis, clasp knife spasticity
UMN injury
Destruction of anterior horns –> flaccid paralysis after being bit by a mosquito
West Nile Virus
Destruction of anterior horns –> flaccid paralysis in an infant
Werdnig-Hoffman disease (infantile SMA, AR)
Destruction of anterior horns –> flaccid paralysis can be prevented by a vaccine
Poliomyelitis
