Spinal shock

A

Spinal shock is a temporary condition following a spinal cord injury characterized by the loss of all reflexes and autonomic functions below the level of the injury. This condition typically manifests immediately after the injury and can last for days to weeks. The key pathological features include:

  1. Loss of Reflex Activity: Immediate loss of motor, sensory, and autonomic reflexes below the level of the injury.
  2. Flaccid Paralysis: Muscles below the injury may become flaccid and lack tone, reflecting a loss of neural input.
  3. Hypotension: Due to disrupted autonomic regulation, there can be significant drops in blood pressure and heart rate.
  4. Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction: Loss of control over these functions is common due to the interruption of spinal cord pathways.

As spinal shock resolves, reflexes gradually return, and clinical signs of the injury become more apparent. This phase is crucial for diagnosing the extent of spinal cord injury and planning treatment.
