Q
What are the types of paralysis
A
Paralysis can be categorized based on the type of muscle impairment and the areas affected. Common types include:
- Monoplegia: Paralysis affecting a single limb (arm or leg).
- Hemiplegia: Paralysis on one side of the body, affecting an arm and a leg on that side.
- Paraplegia: Paralysis affecting the lower half of the body, typically both legs, and sometimes the lower trunk.
- Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia): Paralysis affecting all four limbs (both arms and legs) and often the torso.
- Diplegia: Paralysis affecting symmetrical parts of the body, often seen in both legs or both arms.
- Paresis: Partial weakness or reduced strength in a muscle or group of muscles, as opposed to complete paralysis.
The type of paralysis often depends on the underlying cause, such as neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis), spinal cord injuries, or traumatic brain injuries.
