spinal nerves Flashcards
- part of PNS
- comes directly off the spinal cord
- 31 pairs (8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal)
description of spinal nerves
- located in PNS
- connect to CNS
- numbered according to CNS
spinal and cranial nerve similarities
- connected to spinal cord (not brain)
- arabic numbers (1,2,3, etc.)
- generally longer except CN X: Vagus
spinal and cranial nerve differences
axons of sensory neurons
posterior root
cell bodies of sensory neurons
posterior root ganglion
innervates deep back muscles and skin of back (smaller)
posterior primary ramus
axons of motor neurons
anterior root
axons of sensory and motor neurons
spinal nerve
innervates everything else from the neck inferiorly (larger)
- also forms nerve plexuses
anterior primary ramus
segments of skin innervated by a single spinal nerve; create a sensory map of the body
dermatomes
chickenpox virus latent in posterior root ganglion; reactivates along dermatome
shingles
organized by function
roots
organized by location
rami
structure you can see with the naked eye
- axons wrapped in connective tissue layers (endo-, peri-, epi-, nerium)
nerve
a network of converging/diverging axons
- typically formed from anterior primary rami
- individual intercostal nerves are the anterior rami of the thoracic spinal nerves
nerve plexus
- anterior rami of C1-C4 spinal nerves
- contains phrenic nerve
cervical plexus
- skin of neck
- skin of ear
- skin of shoulders
cervical plexus sensory
- anterior neck muscles
cervical plexus motor
C3, C4, C5 supplies the diaphragm muscles
phrenic nerve
anterior rami of C5-T1 spinal nerves
- primarily innervated upper limb
- consists of musculocutaneous nerve, axillary nerve, radial nerve, median nerve, and ulnar nerve
brachial plexus
lateral forearm
musculocutaneous nerve sensory
most muscles of anterior compartment of arm
- coracobrachialis
- biceps brachii
- brachialis
musculocutaneous nerve motor
lateral shoulder
axillary nerve sensory
- deltoid
- teres minor
axillary nerve motor
