Spinal cord injuries Flashcards
Mastery
Paraplegia
Hemiplegia
Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia)
central cord syndrome
anterior cord
Brown-Sequard
anterior damge
tract damage
lateral damage
Paraplegia = paralysis of the lower body
Hemiplegia = paralysis of only one side of the body
Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia) = paralysis of all four limbs
anterior- loss of pain and control of trunk
Tract-dorsal horn hurt, no info in
Lateral-less motor commands
someone hurts the left side of their lower thoracic
if the dorsal horn is destroyed, dermatone will stop.
Reduced mechanoreceptors, because they decussate at the caudal medulla
on the left ipsilateral side
right side reduced sensation of temp and pain, because decussates at the same vertebrae
on the opposite contralateral side
tumour or trauma at the cervical spine on the right side
the right side will lose motor commands
left will lose pain and temp on opposite side
loss of motor function and touch on the same side
decreased pain and temperature on right side
weakness and decreased touch and position sense on left side
what side is the injury
on the left side is the injury
decreased touch on ipsilateral
blockage due to herpes
diminished pain and temp on the left side
loss of touch on left side
incomplete paresis of left leg
what side
on the left side of the spinal cord
stab on one side of the neck
left side hemiplegia
loss of sensation on left side
what side of neck
stabbed on left side of the neck
what happens if the aorta around the spinal cord is blocked
loss of blood flow will make the tissue die and the nerves die too
flaccid paraplegia
sensation of touch preserved
lower back pain
symptoms of spinal stroke
central portion of lumbar blocked
back pain, paralysis, death
ASIA scale
light touch, with q tip, mechanoreceptors
pinprick, thermo and nociceptors
strength testing
differences in EMG between spinal cord injury and healthy
what can help
injury EMG is very oscillatory, up and down, regular more stable
with help can get more regular
supported walking
