Spinal Cord Flashcards
Name the 4 regions of Vertebrae (top to bottom)
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacrum & coccyx
How many pairs of spinal nerves?
31 pairs (motor and sensory)
What’s the structure formed by the lumbar and sacral nerves called
Cauda equina
What connects the lateral V to the Third V
Small opening called the
-interventricular foramen
What connects the third ventricle to the fourth
Cerebral aqueduct
How does CSF enter the spinal cord
Spinal canal
Total volume of CSF
Total vol produced each day
- 150ml at any given time
2. 550ml produced each day
Where is Chloriod plexus found
Each of the ventricles
NOT in
- cerebral aqueduct
- anterior/ posterior horn of lateral ventricle
How is CSF produced
Cells actively transport Na+ and ions into ventricles
-
Water follows osmotic gradient
Where is CSF reabsorbed
- From subarachnoid space
- through arachnoid villi
- into superior Sagitta sinus
What’s communicating Hydrocephalus
CSF cannot be reabsorbed at the arachnoid villi
What’s non-communicating Hydrocephalus
An obstruction means CSF cannot leave the ventricles
Clinical importance of CSF
Lumbar puncture allows sample of internal environment of CNS
