Brain Cell Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Nissl staining used for?
A
- Stains neurones soma blue
- Shows density of neurones
- Shows organisation of neurones in different brain structures
2
Q
How does Nissl stain work?
A
- Stains rRNA found on RER
2. Higher conc in neurones than glial so distinguishes
3
Q
What’s Golgi stain used for?
A
- Stains entirety of the cell (unlike nissl)
2. Gives sense of neurone structure
4
Q
Unipolar neurone
A
Only have one axonal branch
5
Q
Where are bipolar neurones found?
A
- Olfactory epithelium
2. Bipolar retinal cells
6
Q
What’s a bipolar neurone?
A
Has two true branches (axon or dendrite)
7
Q
What are multipolar neurones?
A
- Most common type
2. 1 axon, many dendrites
8
Q
What are the 4 types of Glial cells
A
- Astrocyte
- Oligodendrocyte
- Microglia
- Ependymal
9
Q
Astrocytes (4 things)
A
- Star shaped due to lots of processes (not axons/ dendrites)
- Formation of Blood brain barrier (astrocydidc foot processes)
- Closely associated with neuronal cell bodies/ dendrites/ synapses.
- Maintains chemical balance of extracellular fluid (uptake and release of NTs)
10
Q
Oligodendrocytes
A
Produce myelin sheath on multiple axons and in multiple places on an axon
11
Q
Microglial cells
A
- Similar to macrophages
- Ingest pathogens and dead cells- found near inflammation and trauma
- Involved in elimination of parts of neurones
12
Q
Ependymal cells
A
- Tightly linked- filter plasma to make CSF
- Found in choroid plexus at ventricles
- Have cilia to move CSF
