spinal cord Flashcards
What is its main function?
Simple reflexes in limbs and torso
Extension to touch and flexion to pain
Transmission of sensory and motor information
Dorsal root –> Sensory information
Ventral root –>Motor information
What symptoms do you expect when the spinal cord is disconnected from the brain? ( but intact spinal cord)
-even though the brain cannot control or sense the pain consciously, the limb may still withdraw reflexively from a painful stimulus due to the intact spinal reflex (which does not require brain input).
-Stepping movements: the brain’s role is control, (for example to make those movements at the right time and place). so with disconnection u can walk but not coordinated
-the patient is alert and conscious, and can talk and express emotion, However, they will be unable to feel sensations or voluntarily move parts of the body below the level of the spinal injury.
What are reflexes?
they respond to sensory stimulation by stretching\withrawal etc….(main function of spinal cord)
