forebrain(diencephalon) Flashcards
what is the forebrain composed of?
the Diencephalon:
-Thalamus,
-Hypothalamus,
the telencephalon:
-Decorticate - Basal ganglia
-Limbic system
-Neocortex
what are the functions?
-Hypothalamus:
Relay station of brainstem projections with limbic system
Autonomic and Endocrine regulation
Motivated behaviour (feeding, sexual behaviours emotional responses)
-Thalamus
Relay station brainstem projections with the cortex and between cortical regions
-Epithalamus
Regulation of sleep-wake cycle
Regulation of hunger/thirst
What symptoms do you expect when the diencephalon is disconnected from the rest of the brain? (i.e intact thalamus)
Intact olfactory system and smell
Intact hormonal, thermal and homeostatic regulation
Quasi-emotional-phenomena:
Energetic behaviours, but excessive and inappropriate
Sham rage: unchecked and ongoing rage
Pathological uncontrolled laughter or crying
Constant aimless activity – wandering without a purpose
Problems in goal-directed behaviours
what is affect and motivation?
aimless. excessive and spontaneous voluntary movements
- it shows a poorly directed but well-integrated affective behaviour
