Spinal Cord Flashcards
Where is the spinal cord located?
Inside the verterbral column
How far does the spinal cord run?
From the foramen magnum to L1/L2
What does the spinal cord include?
31 pairs of mixed nerves
What is cervical and lumbar enlargement?
The diameter of the nerves at limbs are larger
What is the lumbar cistern?
between L1/L2 where there are no nerves
What is the denticulate ligaments?
Paired bands of the pia matter to the subarachnoid and dura maters
What is the conus medullaris?
Inferior to the medulla, medulla cone
What is the caude equina?
Where dorsal and ventral roots form spinal nerves, ponytail shaped
What is the filum terminale?
spinal cord anchor, extends from the conus medullaris and ends at the coccyx
Name the two roots in the spinal cord?
Dorsal/posterior and ventral/anterior
What’s the difference between spinal roots and spinal nerves?
Dorsal/ventral roots connect together and then connect to the spinal cord. Spinal nerves come from the connection of the roots.
Name the visual structures of gray matter.
Anterior central fissure, posterior central sulcus, and central canal
Decribe gray matter in the spinal cord.
nonmyelinated, filled with cell bodies/soma, contains lateral, anterior and posterior horns
What’s the anterior/ventral horn made of?
somatic motor neurons
What’s the dorsal/posterior horn made of?
sensory neurons
