Meninges Flashcards
What are meninges?
Specialized CT around the CNS, with 3 layers
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater
What’s the structural placement of the dura mater?
superficial tough layer, containing dural folds
What’s the structural placement of the arachnoid mater?
Medial layer, looks like a spider web
What’s the structural placement of the pia mater?
Deep layer, delicate and bound to neural tissue
What are the different parts of the dural folds?
Falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli, falx cerebelli, and dural sinuses.
Where is the falx cerebri?
Leading to longitudinal fissures, curved structure over cerebrum
Where is the tentorium cerebelli?
The tent over the cerebellum, diaphragm of brain
Where is the falx cerebelli?
Dividing the cerebellum
What and where are the dural sinuses?
Blood filled cavities between periosteum and dura mater
What is the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB)?
TSA of the brain, protecting the brain from blood and the chemicals in it
What liquid is the brain surrounded by?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Where is CSF found?
In the ventricles and spinal cord
What are the ventricles? How many of them are there and where are they located?
Hollow cavities in the brain, filled with CSF. 4 of them: 1 and 2 are parallel to each other, 3 is under 1 and 2, and 4 is near the midbrain.
Describe where the lateral ventricles are located.
In each cerebral hemisphere, lateral to the third ventricle
