Brain Divisions Flashcards
What’s the difference between gray and white matter on the brain?
Gray matter is unmyelinated and superficial. White matter is myelinated/insulated and deep.
Placement of the 4 lobes in relation to the sulci?
Frontal lobe: anterior to the central sulcus
Parietal lobe: posterior to the central sulcus
Temporal lobe: inferior to the lateral sulcus
Occipital lobe: posterior to each
The function of the primary visual cortex?
interpret what we see
The function of the primary auditory cortex?
interpret sound
The function of the primary somatic motor cortex?
voluntary control of skeletal muscle
The function of the primary somatic sensory cortex?
receive sensory input
What’s the function of the cerebral cortex?
reasoning, executive functioning, motor movement
What’s the name of clusters in the CNS? The PNS?
Nuclei and ganglia
What structures are apart of the diencephalon?
The epithalamus, thalamus, and hypothalamus
What is the function of the epithalamus?
third eye, pineal gland
What’s the function of the thalamus?
relay station for sensory input of cerebrum, conscious awareness
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
endocrine regulation, homeostatic control, emotional and behavioral drives
