A
  • 80-85% of all children with LD struggle w/spelling
  • There are several subtypes
  • Often are poor readers, as well
  • Write as little as possible
  • May not accept responsibility for poor spelling
  • View English spelling as chaotic, arbitrary, and beyond their control

  • These kids go through all of the developmental stages, just slower
  • Spelling is phonetically accurate
  • Slower progression through stages
  • Look like younger children

Phonetically Inaccurate subtype of spelling disorder

A
  • Spelling errors do not necessarily follow phonetic patterns; less predictable
  • Associated with poorest reading and most pervasive language deficits
  • These children are likely to have poor phonological awareness

Orthographic memory failure subtype of spelling disorder

A
  • Non-phonetic words spelled phonetically
  • Same words spelled creatively several times
  • Homophone confusions (bare vs. bear)
  • Poor proofreading (do OK on PA tests, but can’t remember spellings so continue to sound everything out)

  • Distributed, multimodal practice (visual, verbal, etc.)

* practice over and over until they get the patterns down
