What are the (4) spelling development stages & associated ages?
- Emergent (TD: 2-5 y/o)

Characteristics of the ‘emergent’ spelling development stage.
(ages: 2-5 y/o)
- Random marks, representational drawings, random letters & numbers
- Move towards representing some letter-sound matches
Characteristics of the ‘letter name’ or ‘phonetic’ spelling development stage.
(ages: 5-8 y/o)
- Mastering the alphabetic principle: represent each sound in a word, from L to R
- Consonants represented first; move towards vowels
Characteristics of the ‘within-word pattern’ spelling development stage
(ages: 7-10 y/o)
- Begin to master patterns of the English system (especially vowel patterns)
Characteristics of the ‘syllables and affixes’ spelling development stage.
(ages: 9-14 y/o)
- Most one syllable words are spelled correctly
- Learn conventions for syllable juncture
- Learn how to add common word endings
What does it mean that spelling development has derivational relations?
-Learn to derive spellings from base words/word roots

- Deletion of less salient phonemes (particularly in ‘internal’ locations & in unaccented syllables)
