What is prosody?
Prosody is the study of the tune and rhythm of speech and how these features contribute to meaning.
What is prosody made up of? (VIPPS)
Volume (how loud)
Intonation (rise and fall)
Pitch (highness and lowness of tone)
Pace (speed)
Stress (emphasis)
Define Pragmatics
Pragmatics is the study of meaning behind the words, dependent on their context. What this means is that the meaning of a word and the word itself are two separate things; by saying a word in two separate contexts, it can have two totally separate meanings.
How does Prosodys overlap emotion with speech?
The same acoustic features that are used to express prosody (VIPPS) are also affected by emotion in the voice.
Difference between linguistic and paralinguistic?
Linguistic – direct expression of meaning
Paralinguistic – may indicate attitude or membership of a speech community
What do paralingusitic features help to establish?
A speaker’s attitude
How is paralinguistics related to sociolinguistics
Another paralinguistic aspect of speech are those features that indicate a speakers membership of a speech community.
These are effectively sociolinguistic markers of speaker identity.
Define Idiolect
An indervidual’s variety and/or use of language
Define Dialect
A particular form of language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group
Define Sociolect
The dialect of a particular social class
Define Denotation
An expression of the languages literal meaning thus the contrast of other meanings including connotation
Connotation
A commonly understood cultural or emotional association that any given word or phrase carries, in addition to its explicit or literal meaning
