Audience
Either the implied or the actual receiver (listner/reader) of a text
Context
The surrounding circumstances of language production, including the temporal and spatial (occupying space) situation, but also wider social and cultural influences
Dialect
Variation in words and structures associated with a particular geographical region
Field
The topic area / concerns of a text
Formality
The level of acceptability of respectability of language, often dependent on context
Genre
The text type
Idiolect
An individuals personal linguistic features used for communication
Mode
The methord/medium of communication; written, spoken for communication
Register
A variety of language associated with a particular situation of use
Representation
A projection of a certain way of thinking about people, institutions, concepts and circumstances through use of language
Sociolect
A defined use of language as a result of membership of a particular social group
