Speculum Examination Flashcards
Explain the purpose and process of the exam to the patient.
I would like to conduct a speculum examination. Have you heard or had one of these before?
I’d like to do this examination so that I can obtain cervical smears or swabs.
This involves inserting a speculum (a small plastic device) into the vagina and having a look through at the inside of the vagina the neck of the womb called the cervix.
This examination should not be painful but it may feel uncomfortable.
If at any point you want me to stop the procedure please let me know. You may experience some light vaginal bleeding after the procedure.
I would like to bring a nurse as a chaperone to maintain your comfort during this exam. Is this alright with you?
