Explaining a test result Flashcards
Opening liner
Hi I’m Sarah, one of the doctors here. How can I help you?
After the patient states that they have come in to find out result of the test say…
“Yes I have your test results right here. Before we go through your test results, do you mind me asking you a few questions just so I can put the results into context?”
What questions can get the patient to lead you to how they came about doing the test?
“Are you able to tell me about the circumstances which led to these test being performed?”
Get a general sense of their health
Are you able to tell me about your health in general?
Do you have any other medical conditions you receive treatment for?
Does anyone in your family also experience the same issues?
How to sign post to talk about the test result?
Thank you for sharing that. I’d like to discuss the results with you now.
How to discuss the test results
Discuss objectively what the test shows.
Discuss what this result implies.
State how this relates to the patient.
How to check whether the patient understands you
Before we discuss what can be done about this, I would just like to check that I have explained things clearly to you. Are you able to tell me what you understand so far? Do you have any further questions?
How to explain what can be done about the test
So I would like to organise this follow up plan…
- Arrange further tests/ treatment
- Arrange an information sheet for the patient to take home and read as a resource
- Arrange a follow up appointment so that the patient can ask further questions
