What is the acronym for BLS?
DRSABC
What is the Danger?
Assess the environment for any danger towards the patient or yourself.
What is Response?
Assess the patient for response
- Call out first
- Apply painful stimulus - Sternal rub/ trap squeeze
What is Send?
Send for help! Yell out for help if you are alone, call 111.
What is Airway and Breathing?
Assess the status of the airway:
- Head tilt/ chin life
- Look into the airway, clear any obvious obstructions for chest rise and fall,
- Feel for air on your cheek
What is circulation?
Feel for a carotid pulse - take a maximum of 10 seconds for this step.
Commence CPR.
Describe ratio of breaths/ compressions.
Describe location and rate of chest compressions. Describe how to deliver breaths.
Deliver 30 compressions for every 2 breaths.
Compress the chest on the lower 2/3rds of the sternum, for 1/3 depth of the chest.
Aim for a rate of 100 - 120 compressions per minute.
Deliver breaths via mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by pinching the nose/ tilting the head and lifting the chin
Deliver breaths via Bag-Valve-Mask by applying jaw thrust.
