Spectroscopy Flashcards
What is AAS?
A lamp of the same element as being analysed shines through flame with sample and detector measures intensity of resultant light. Very similar to colourimetry
UV-Vis
Sends monochrome light through a sample and reference cuvette and compares the absorbance. Changes through wavelengths to find electron levels
IR Spec
IR Radiation causes covalent bonds to vibrate, Different bonds vibrate at different wave numbers. Useful for identifying functional groups.
Mass Spec
Atomises and removes electron from particle to make it charged (can be fragmented), accelerated through an electric field, exposed to a magnetic field depending on mass to charge ratio deflects at different amounts. Detector determines charge to mass ratio.
NMR
Radio waves are fired at particles in a magnetic field.
