Soaps and Detergents Flashcards
1
Q
How do soaps&detergents “wet”
A
Through the use of a surfactant which breaks the hydrogen bonds, the soap lowers surface tension allowing to spread rather than bead
2
Q
Soap Structure
A
Carboxylate head with positive ion forming a salt. The hydrophobic non polar tail binds to no polar substances and the hydrophilic polar bonds to water and other polar solvents.
3
Q
Detergent Structure
A
Similar to soaps with heads and tails, howeever head can be pos, neg, or neu allowing to function in hard water
4
Q
How are soaps synthesized
A
saponification, triglycerides are broken with NaOH into 3 soaps and a glycerol
5
Q
How do soaps function
A
form micelles which are washed away with water
