Formalin (formaldehyde)
- toxic w/ inhalation and to mucous membrane (eyes, face, skin)
- in case of exposure, rinse w/ water/saline
- when labeling, indicate presence of chemical
how to handle bullets
- Don’t drop bullets into metal basin/bowl (put in sterile plastic container instead)
- Don’t wrap in cotton/tissue paper
- dont rinse w/ water/saline
- handle each fragments/bullets SEPARATELY!
what to include if reporting to manufacturer on an explanted device
- date of explantation
- name, mailing address, phone of MD
- date of pt death or date of disuse
what to do if the pt requested to have the explanted orthopedic device
- check that it is not recalled
- check that it does not need to be sent to patho
- document the request and the person who return the device
