- Silences, exploring thoughts
- Check understanding
- Collect all thoughts, concerns, fears, anxieties and expectations.
- Be curious. Explore any cues they may have hinted.
- Understand the relative; are they well? Their mood, their responsibilities as a carer, other stressors in their life, the impact of the situation.
- Summarise the ICE. A powerful way to help the relative feel understood and also focuses the management plan.
- Empathise. The immensity of the situation and its potential impact on the person.
- Enquire about communication between the relatives and patient.
- Provide options/suggestions to manage each concern in turn.
- Consider if other professionals or support groups may be helpful.
- Empower with regard to their concerns.
- Plan future meetings. Is anything required in the meantime?
- Safety net: rescue treatment and contact numbers in the event of sudden deterioration.
