Species Interdependancies Flashcards
What is interspecific dependency?
means a interdependency between 2 members of different species
What is intraspecfic dependency?
dependency between 2 members of the same species
What is a symbiotic interaction?
When 2 species interact with one another
What is mutualism?
mutualism is a form of symbiotic interdependency, where both species work together and benefit
eg. ox pecker and an ox
What is a benign interaction?
when neither species are harmed
What is commensalism?
one species benefits from the interaction but the other species is not harmed
eg. anemone and clownfish
What is a harmful interaction?
When a species is harmed when interacting with another species
What is amensalism?
one is inhabited/harmed and the other is not affected
What is parasitism?
when a parasite benefits from a relationship with a host to the detriment of the host
eg. malaria in humans
What are keystone species?
species which plays a critical role in the ecosystem and, when removed, causes a serious imbalance further down the food chain
