Reproduction Flashcards
What is a stem cell?
Has no purpose and has the potential to be any cell
What is sexual reproduction?
The fusion of gametes from two genetically distinct parents
What is the result of sexual reproduction?
Results in a genetically unique and diverse offspring
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction without sex to produce a genetically identical offspring from just one parent
What is the result of asexual reproduction?
Results in genetically identical organism to parent organism
What are the advantages of sexual reproduction?
- increases genetically capacity due to an increase in genetic diversity
- parents have an investment in offspring
- it is a good strategy in unstable environment
What is the k-r continium?
r= means lot of offspring - high mortality rate(in the thousands)
k= few offspring - low mortality rate
What is SCNT?
stands for Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer. it is the process of taking the nucleus of a cell (from a tissue like skin) and then insert the nucleus into an animal egg that has had it’s own DNA carrying nucleus removed
