Speciation, Classification, Adaption Flashcards
Order of classification
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What’s is the definition of speciation
Producing 2 or more species from one
How is a species created ?
2 populations geographically isolated
Each pop has variation due to mutation
Each pop is now in a different location/environment
Each pop undergoes natural selection best adapted to survive reproduce and pass on the alleles for that adaption
They can no longer reproduce successfully when brought back together
What are the 3 domains
Bacteria
Archea
Eukaryota
What does an evolutionary tree show
How different species have evolved over time
What does the point of each branch (fork) represent on an evolutionary tree
A common ancestor
What is extinction caused by
Other living organisms
Environmental changes
What’s a fossil
Hard parts of an animal ( teeth bones) that have been left for centuries to decompose and fossilise
Can you track evolution through fossils ?
Yes, you can look at changes in fossils over time
What are the 3 main headings for adaptation
Structural
Behavioural
Functional
What’s an extremophile
Can survive in a harsh environment
