Speciation and patterns of Evolution Flashcards
what is speciation
process of forming a new species
what does patterns of evolution mean
evolution has two different patterns which result in different adaptions over time
what is divergent evolution
numerous species develop from one common ancestor, becoming less and less alike over time
what is convergent evolution
numerous species that are not closely related but occupy similar habitats resemble each other
what are analogous structures
animal structures that perform similar functions but aren’t closely related
what are homologous structures
animal structures that have evolved from a common ancestor but now have different uses
how could you test if two similar looking species are different
allow them to breed, if they are different their offspring will not be viable or fertile
how is speciation, biodiversity and evolution linked
biodiversity is the variation in a species, for speciation to occur there must be variation and when speciation has occurred that means evolution has also occurred
