Cell Division Flashcards
why is cell cycle important
its important for growth and development, maintenance and repair
what are the 3 stages of cell cycle
interphase- DNA replication, Mitosis- nucleus division and cytokinesis- cell division
what are somatic cells
body cells
what are gamete cells
sex cells, egg and sperm cells
what are haploid cells
gametes that have one set of chromosomes that result from meiosis
what are diploid cells
somatic cells that have two sets of chromosomes that result from mitosis
what is interphase
cell prepares for mitosis. chromosomes make copies of themselves and the copies stay attached to each other
what is prophase
spindles start to form, the chromosomes condense and nucleus breaks apart
what is metaphase
copies line up in the middle of the cell along the spindles
what is anaphase
chromosomes split into two identical groups and move to either side of the cell
what is telophase
two new nuclei are formed and spindles start to break down
what is cytokinesis
cell membrane and cytoplasm divides into two seperate cells
what is mitosis
is a diploid that results in two new genetically identical cells from one cell
what is meiosis
4 daughter cells that are genetically different, haploid that occur in the gonads
what is apoptosis
programmed cell death that removes unwanted or infected cells
