Specialized cells and Stem cells Flashcards
Why are cells specialized?
to carry out a particular function so their structures can vary
Example of specialized cells
In humans, red blood cells are specialized for carrying oxygen and white blood cells are specialized for defending the body against disease
Cell differentiation
the process by which a cell changes to become specialized for its job
What happens as cells change?
they develop different organelles and turn into different types of cells which allows them to carry out specific functions
Stem cells (undifferentiated cells)
can divide to produce lots more undifferentiated cells
How can stem cells (undifferentiated cells) differentiate?
depends on what instructions they’re given
Where are stem cells found?
early human embryos
Can adult stem cells (found in bone marrow) turn into any cell type?
they can’t, only certain ones, such as blood cells
Uses of stem cells
can be grown in a lab to produce clones and made to differentiate into specialized cells to use in medicine or research
