Diffusion Flashcards
Diffusion
the net (overall) movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Does diffusion require energy?
no because its a passive process
Where does diffusion happen?
in liquids and gases because the particles in these substances are free to move randomly
The bigger the difference in concentration the faster the what?
the diffusion rate
What does diffusion, osmosis and active transport all have in common?
they enable substances to move in and out of cells
What can diffuse through cell membranes?
Only very small molecules like glucose, amino acids, water and oxygen
What can’t diffuse through cell membranes?
Big molecules like starch and proteins can’t fit through the membrane
