Levels of Organization Flashcards
Cells
Living organisms are made up of cells which are like tiny building blocks
Multicellular
Organisms that contain lots of cells
Single cell
Organisms that consist of a single cell
Eukaryotic cells
complex and include all animal and plant cells
Prokaryotic cells
smaller and simpler
e.g. bacteria
Organelles
tiny structures within cells
Organelles found in animal and plant cells
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm mitochondria and ribosomes
Nucleus
an organelle which contains the genetic material that controls the cell’s activities. Its surrounded by its own membrane
Cell membrane
this membrane forms the outer surface of the cell and controls the substances that go in and out
Cytoplasm
a gel like substance where most of the cell’s chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes which control these reactions.
Mitochondria
small organelles where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration takes place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
Ribosomes
small organelles where proteins are made in the cell
Organelles found in plant cells ONLY
Chloroplasts, cell wall and vacuole
Chloroplasts
photosynthesis which makes food for the plant happens here. Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
Cell wall
a rigid structure made of cellulose which surrounds the cell membrane. It supports the cell and strengthens it
