Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
the net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration
Partially permeable membrane
a membrane with very small holes in it
so small that only tiny molecules like water can pass through them and bigger molecules like sucrose can’t
Why do water molecules pass both ways through the membrane during osmosis?
because water molecules move randomly all the time
Why does the sucrose solution get more dilute (weaker)?
since there’s more water molecules on one side, there’s a steady net flow of water into the region with fewer water molecules into the sucrose solution
Tissue fluid
surrounds the cells in the body
It’s water with oxygen, glucose and other stuff dissolved in it
It’s also squeezed out of the blood capillaries to supply the cells with everything they need
