Specialized Cells Flashcards
Levels of Organization in Animal Bodies
1) Organism
2) Organ System
3) Organ
4) Tissue
5) Cell
Organism
-An individual living thing, such as a plant, animal, bacterium, protist, or fungus
-Complex organisms are made up of many different organ systems working together
organ system
-a system of one or more organs and structures that work together to perform a major vital function
examples:
-Circulatory system
-Respiratory system
-Digestive system
-nervous system
-musculoskeltal system
organ
-structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a complex bodily function
-Some organs are part of more than one organ system
tissue
-collection of similar cells that perform a particular, but limited function
-Each type of tissue contains many types of specialized cells
-each type of tissue is found in most organ systems
4 major types of tissues
-epithelial tissue
-connective tissue
-muscle tissue
-nerve tissue
cell
membrane-bound unit that contains the fundamental molecules of life and of which all living things are composed
