Plants Flashcards
distinguishing factors in all plants:
-multicellular organisms
-many forms: mosses, ferns, conifers, flowering plants..
-perform photosynthesis to make their own food
2 distinguishing factors
- green in colour
-during most of life cycle — immobile
all plants require specialized tissues for..
-to be able to exchange gas (photosynthesis & respiration)
-to be able to transport materials around plant body (vascular tissue)
-to have structures that allow for reproduction (flowers, pollen [male], eggs [female])
-to have structures that protect the remainder of the plant (dermal tissue)
3 tissue types:
-dermal tissue system: tissue that covers outer surface of plant
-vascular tissue system: tissues that transport materials throughout plant, (ex. water, nutrients, minerals…)
-ground tissue system: the other structures within plant
root system functions
-mostly grows beneath surface
-anchors plant
-absorbs water and minerals from soil
-stores food
root system uses
-food (sweet potatoes, carrots, sugar beets)
-flavourings (liquorice, ginger)
-fibers (baskets)
-natural remedies
shoot system functions
-photosynthesis
-produce flowers for sexual reproduction
functions and uses of leaf
functions:
-photosynthesis (chloroplasts)
-support, reproduction, protection, attraction
Uses:
-food (lettuce, spinach, onion, tea, herbs)
-waxes and medicines
-food for livestock
functions and uses of flowers
functions: sexual reproduction
Uses:
-food and flavourings (rice, bananas, coffee, chocolate)
-clothing (cotton)
functions and uses of stem/trunk
functions:
-support, transportation of substances
uses:
-flavouring (sugar cane)
-building materials (wood, paper, cork)
-clothing (linen)
-medicines (aspirin)
epidermal tisse
epidermis: thin layer of cells that covers surface of non woody plant
periderm tissue
surface of woody plants
