Specialised Cells Flashcards
What are stem cells in very early development?
unspecialised
What are stem cells?
stem cells are unspecialised cells that can divide and make more stem cells (to self-renew) or they can become different types of cells with specialised functions
Cells—–> Tissues—–> Organs—–>
Organ Systems—–> Organisms
What are tissues? Give an example:
tissues is a group of specialised cells that have a similar structure and function , example; muscle tissue which is made up of many muscle cells
What are organs? Give an example:
organs are a group of tissues working together to perform the same function, example; the heart which contains different tissues including nerve and muscle tissues
What is an organ system? Give an example:
organ system are group of organs that can work together to provide a common function, example; the circulatory system or the respiratory system.
What are stem cells involved in?
stem cells are involved in growth and repair of damaged cells
