Reproduction Flashcards
What are diploid cells?
diploid cells are cells that contain two copies of each of the chromosomes for that species
What are haploid cells?
haploid cells are cells that have only one set of chromosomes, these are the gametes (sex cells) in plants and animal
What is fertilisation in animals?
fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo
Gametes in males are what and produced where?
In males gametes are called sperm. sperm is produced in sex organs called testes
Gametes in females are what and produced where?
In females gametes are called eggs. eggs are produced in the sex organ called ovaries
