Producing new cells; Cell Division Flashcards
what is chromosome complement?
The number of chromosomes in a typical cell of an organism.
what is a chromosome?
Chromosomes are threadlike structures found inside of a living cell.
what is diploid?
A cell that contains two sets of chromosomes.
what happens each time a cell divides?
Two daughter cell is produced.
what way do Multicellular organisms use cell division?
Multicellular organisms use cell division as a way of producing more cells for growth.
what is mitosis?
A type of cell division which produces daughter cells identical to the parent.
what does mitosis maintains?
Mitosis maintains the chromosome complement and ensures that each daughter cell revives all genetic information needed to carry out its activities and functions.
what is a chromatid?
Chromatid is the replicated copy of a chromosome visible during mitosis.
list the stages of cell division:
- Each chromosome makes an identical copy of itself
- Chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
- Spindle fibres pull chromatids apart to opposite ends (poles) of cell
- Nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes
- Cytoplasm divides and two separate diploid cells are formed
what is mitosis required for?
Mitosis is required for growth of new cells and repair of damaged cells.
