Special Species Anesthesia Flashcards
What is the main cause of death in dogs, cats, rabbits?
recovery
Should special species be fasted?
NO; rats & mice do not vomit, rabbits & guinea pigs experience GI disturbances
What the the 2 major complications of anesthesia?
high risk of hypothermia & hypoglycemia
What is different about the dosing?
require high doses bc they have high metabolic rates
What route of drug administration is most preferred?
SQ
Which drugs are used in combination IV?
Ketamine & Alpha 2 adrenoceptors
What inhalant anesthetic is used?
iso or sevo
What animal is iso irritant to?
guinea pigs
What method is used for induction & maintenance?
mask
What breathing system is used & why?
non-rebreathing bc low resistance w smaller dead space
If not dehydrated, how do you administer fluids?
SQ or IP
What is most important about post-op care & pain assessment?
you need to know NORMAL
Which opioid is most commonly used for analgesia?
Burpenorphine
Which drugs are used for chronic pain management?
Gabapentin & Pregabalin
What is the average temperature for aquatic & temperate sps?
20-25 C
What is the average temperature for tropical sps?
25-35 C
What is the CV anatomy of squamotes & chelonians?
3 chambered heart (2 atria & 1 ventricle)
What is the CV anatomy of crocodillians?
4 chambered heart
What is the normal chelonian BP?
15-30 mmHg
What is the normal lizard BP?
60-80 mmHg
Is the oxygen consumption lower or higher than mammals & birds?
lower
What makes anesthetics drugs have more respiratory depressant effect?
lack of diaphragm, so inspiration & expiration are active processes
Why should nephrotoxic drugs be avoided and injections into the limb legs be avoided?
bc blood from hind legs & tail may pass via kidneys before returning to the heart
What combination of drugs should be used for sedation?
Benzodiazepines & alpha 2 adrenoceptor agonists IM
What are the options for injectable anesthetics?
Propofol IV
Alfaxalone
Ketamine
Zolazepan + Tiletamine
What are the negative side effects of Propofol?
decreased HR & respiratory depression
What is important about Ketamine?
dose related to body temperature
Can a snake be intubated awake?
yes
What is important about chelonian & crococilian intubation?
tracheal rings are complete so avoid inflating cuff
What is important about chelonian intubation?
trachea bifurcates rostrally, so it is easy to intubate only one bronchus
What is different about reptile blood?
hypotonic compared to mammals
What type of fluids can be used in reptiles?
isotonic saline diluted w sterile water 9:1 reptile ringers (2 parts dextrose/saline, 1 part LRS)
What fluids do you use for hypovolemic reptiles?
hypertonic colloids & colloids
What is most important to monitor in reptiles?
body temp & protect eyes
Which NSAID is used?
Meloxicam
Which local anesthetic is used?
Lidocaine
