Special Sensory (sensory Receptors) Flashcards
Where are the sensory receptors located on a neuron?
-part of the dendrites
What are the different types if sensory receptors? (4)
- chemoreceptors
- mechanoreceptors
- photoreceptors
- thermoreceptors
What stimuli is needed to stimulate a chemoreceptor?
-oxygen, pH, various organic molecules such as glucose
What stimuli is need to stimulate a mechanoreceptor?
- pressure (baroreceptors
- cell stretch (osmoreceptors)
- vibration
- acceleration
- sound
What stimuli is needed to stimulate a photoreceptor?
-photons of light
What stimuli is needed to stimulate a thermoreceptor?
-various degrees of heat
Explain the conduction of a sensory stimulus
1) stimulus activates receptors
2) creates depolarization=receptor potential (graded potential)
3) reaches threshold
4) produces action potential
What are tonic receptors? What is an example?
- slowly adapting receptors that respond for the duration of a stimulus
- ex. Pain receptor
What are Phasic Receptors? What are some examples?
- receptors that rapidly adapt to a constant stimulus and turn off
- ex: odor, touch, temp
Which sensory pathway does not pass through the thalamus? Where does it pass?
- olfactory pathway
- projects through the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex
Equilibrium pathways project what area?
-cerebellum
