Nervous System (division and Pathway) Flashcards
The nervous system is divided into what 2 systems?
Central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
The central nervous system consists of what structures?
Spinal cord and brain
The peripheral nervous sytem consists of what structures?
Sensory (afferent) neurons
Efferent neurons
What is the function of the Sensory (afferent) division of the PNS?
Sends info to the CNS through afferent sensory neurons
What is the function of the efferent division of the PNS?
Takes info from the CNS to target cells via efferent neurons
Efferent neurons are subdivided into what systems?
Somatic motor division
Autonomic division
What is the function of the somatic motor division?
Controls skeletal muscles
What is the function of the autonomic division?
Controls cardiac muscles, exocrine glands, and some typew of adipose tissue
The autonomic nervous system is divided into what systems?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
The sympathetic nervous system controls what function?
Fight or flight
The parasympathetic nervous system controls what functions?
Day to day activities
How does information flow through the nervous system?
Stimulus > sensor > inpur signal > integrating center > output signal > target > response
