Autonomic Nervous System (organization/ Characteristics) Flashcards
The autonomic nervous system is divided into what 2 divisions?
-Sympathetic and Parasympathetic divisions
What are the characteristics of the autonomic nervous system?
- Maintains homeostasis
- antagonistic control
- has a 2 neuron system
Describe the term Antagonistic control?
-one is excitatory, the other is inhibitory
Which structures go through sympathetic inner action only?
-sweat glands and blood vessels
Describe the 2 neuron sytstem
- 1st neuron is called preganglionic neuron; originates in the CNS and projects to the autonomic ganglion outside the CNS
- The Preganglionic neuron synapses with he second neuron in the pathway, the postganglionic neruon
Where is Sympathetic Pathway located in the CNS?
Thoracic to lumbar segments of the spinal cord
Where’s the ganglion location in the sympathetic pathway?
Close to spinal cord
Describe the length of the neurons in the sympathetic pathway
Short preganglionic
Long postganglionic neurons
What neurotransmitters is working in the sympathetic division? (2)
- Norepiniephrine
- ACh
What are the receptor types in the Sympathetic division?
-Adrenergic (alpha and beta)
Where is the Parasympathetic division located in the CNS?
-Brain stem and sacral segments
Where is the ganglion location in the Parasympathetic division?
On or near target organs
Describe the length of neurons in the Parasympathetic Division
-long preganglionic,
Short postganglionic neurons
What neurotransmitters are working in the Parasympathetic division?
-Acetylcholine
What are the receptor types in the Parasympathetic division?
Nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic
