Q

What is the pathway of the hearing process?

A

Sound hits eardrum it then vibrates and transmits the vibration into the middle ear

middle ear, auditory ossicles, transmit vibration caused by sound waves through middle ear cavity into inner ear

In the cochlea:
Movement of the tectorial membrane pulls on the tips of the hair cells embedded in it, causing them to bend.

Bending of the hair cells releases a neurotransmitter that activates the vestibulocochlear nerve.

16
Q

what is cortical blindness

A

person cannot perceive anything

17
Q

when does cortical blindness occur

A

when patient has damage to visual cortex on both sides

18
Q

what are the two parts of the inner ear

A
  • cochlea

- vestibular apparatus

19
Q

what is cochlea for

A

hearing

20
Q

what is vestibular apparatus for

A

balance

21
Q

what occurs in cochlea

A

hair cells bend and release a neurotransmitter that activates the vestibulocochlear nerve

22
Q

what are the two parts of the vestibular apparatus

A
  • otolithic organs

- semicircular canals

23
Q

what do the otolithic organs do

A

detect linear movement of the head

utricle-horizontal

saccule-vertical

24
Q

what condition causes hearing loss due to fractures or malformation of the auditory ossicles

A

osteogenesis imperfect

25
Q

what is meniers disease

A

condition in which excess endolymph causes swelling inside the vestibular apparatus and cochlea

26
Q

what are symptoms of meniers disease

A

debilitating vertigo and hearing loss
