Pilotage
Pilotage is compulsory for all vsls except those under enrollment in west coast between US/Canada. Pilots can be order directly through PSP or PA pilot station VHF ch 13
PSVTS
USCG is in charge of compliance, supervision and enforcement of PSVTS
72 colregs
Apply to all navigable waters and are enforced by the USCG
Local magnetic disturbance
Of more than 2 degrees at the north end of hood canal near pt. Hannon
Port gamble bay
- Dock against current
- Local knowledge and precise piloting is essential for docking/ undocking at lumber mill wharf
- Stay mid channel when entering until 200+yards south of south light. Then head for wharf keeping east face of pier open to keep clear of 2 fathom shoal to the west
Hood canal bridge
- 2 fixed openings on east and west side of bridge. Each has private fog signal
- Center 600’ of bridge are pontoon which open for larger vsls
- Bridge tenders monitors VHF ch. 16 working channel VHF ch 13
- Bridge will open with 1hr notice given by telephone, radio, visual or sound signal. Open- 1 prolonged 1 short. If bridge tender sounds 5 short the bridge can not open immediately or will be closing shortly
Hood canal naval operating / exercise area
All water from 47-50N to 47-42N excluding .25nm area from west shore and .25nm area from east shore up to just north of king spit
1. Used intermittently by navy for exercise and non explosive torpedo ranging. Nav lanes near shore are not closed to navigation
2. Navigation permitted within area except during naval exercises. Vsls cannot remain in or transit area during these times
3. Naval vsls flying red “bravo” flag or displaying flashing red light means operations in progress
Dabob bay naval operating area
- Irregular shaped areas covering most of Dabob bay
- No trawling or dragging
- No anchoring except between shore and 10 fathom curve
- Flashing amber light means naval ops in progress but no torpedo or testing. Vsls May transit the area during these times but must keep clear of naval vsls
- Flashing red light means area is closed to navigation. Vsls within the area must turn off engines and sounding devices. Follow direction from naval vsls.
