Suctioning after birth
prior to delivery of body mouth first then nose
APGAR
appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, respiratory
Appearance (APGAR)
0=blue or pale
1=body pink, ext blue
2=completely pink
Pulse(APGAR)
0=absent
1=below 100
2=above 100
Grimace(APGAR)
0=no response
1=grimaces, feeble cry
2=cries, sneezes, cough
Activity(APGAR)
0=limp
1=some flexion
2=active motion
Respiratory(APGAR)
0=absent
1=slow & irregular
2=strong cry
Acrocyanosis
arms and legs blue and mottled
Fluid challenge in neonate
10 ml/kg
Bradycardia in neonate
sign of hypoxia, oxygenate
Major problems in newborn
resp distress and hypothermia
Bronchiolitis
wheezing under age 1
Croup
laryngobronchiolitis, low fever barking cough give racemic epi

birth -7 lbs, 6 months - doubles, 1 year - triples

Epiglottitis
swelling of epiglottis, high fever, bacterial, stridor, drooling
SIDS
below the age of 1 most often between 4 & 6 months
