Initial assessment
airway and c-spine, breathing, circulation, bleeding, AVPU
Wheezing
narrowing of the small airways due to edema
Causes of wheezing
asthma, allergic rx/anaphylaxis, emphysema, aspiration, bronchitis
Causes of rales and crackles
CHF, PE, L heart failure (fluid in small airways)
Causes of rhonchi
pneumonia, chronic bronchitis
Cheyne-Stokes respirations
rapid breathing with periods of deep and shallow breaths.
Kussmaul’s respirations
deep labored breathing associated with DKA
Biot’s respirations
breathing pattern that goes from shallow to deep to shallow to apneic
Dilated pupils causes
cerebral hypoxia, cocaine, epi, amphetamines
Pinpoint pupils causes
opiods, narcotics, organophosphate
Unequal pupil causes
brain injury, herniation, bleeding
Optic nerve for eyesight and pupil size
cranial nerve II and III
JVD causes
best seen in semi-fowlers. Tension pneumo, cardiac tamponade, R heart failure, traumatic asphyxia
Flat neck vein causes
hemothorax, dehydrated (hypovolemia)
When listening to chest you should
listen anterior and posterior
