South African Apartheid Flashcards
Apartheid
In 1948, The National Party came to power and voted to implement a series of segregational laws known as Apartheid.
Segregation
It was what separated South Africa into whites and non-whites. This made it so it told where black people could live, work, travel, sit, go to the bathroom, eat, etc. Also, under apartheid black people could not vote or be in government.
Nelson Mandela
He was a leading member of the ANC. He believed in non-violent protests, but was accused of plotting against the white government. He was later arrested at 46 where he had to do labor work only in prison. However he was later taken out of prison by F.W. De Klerk and became the first black president.
F.W. De Klerk
In 1989, F.W. De Klerk was elected president and tried to dismantle apartheid. He released Mandela from prison in 1990. They worked together to end apartheid, and in 1993 De Klerk and Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize. Then in 1994 Mandela became the first black president.
African National Congress (ANC)
It was made in the 1950’s, used to fight against apartheid. The goal was to increase the rights of Africans (natives ones). However it was declared illegal, but people still were in it.
